Save detainees

Statement on the central prison of Hama
We, the undersigned individuals and organizations, call on the United Nations, the International Syria Support Group and relevant international bodies and organizations to protect and monitor the rights of detainees and take immediate action to ensure the safety of the prisoners of Hama Central Prison who began a protest on May 2nd 2016.
This protest was a response to the violation of the prisoner’s basic human rights at the hands of Syrian government forces. To break the deadlock the detainees presented the following demands to the government:
1. Immediate release of all detainees who have been arbitrarily arrested.
2. A stop to the transfer of detainees to other branches of the security forces or to military “field courts” and to Saidnaya prison where detainees face inevitable death as a result of severe and brutal torture.
3. An end to arbitrary and moot courts whether they be military or in the so-called “Anti-Terrorism Court” which relies on confessions extracted through torture in the security branches.
4. Improvement of conditions for detainees in which their essential needs are met and relevant international bodies are permitted to conduct periodic visits to the prison.
However, ten days after a verbal agreement was made, it appears that the regime was only buying time. Only a few prisoners have been released and when the detainees themselves demanded they implement the terms of the agreement the guards threatened to close the doors. The May 14 deadline for implementation has now expired. This means that the detainees cannot communicate with international bodies and are now in effect cut off from the outside world.
We, the undersigned individuals and organizations express our deep concern for the fate of the hundreds of detainees in Hama Prison and call on the International Community to put pressure on the regime to abide by its commitments, in particular the previously agreed release of detainees. We also call upon the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross to take responsibility for the safety of the detainees of Hama Central Prison.
